Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Hi, I’m Tino, a dynamic Product Manager and content creator, who is deeply passionate about making a significant difference in the tech and social media industry. My journey began at Bryn Mawr College, USA, where I graduated with a double major in Computer Science and Honors in Mathematics. This educational background not only equipped me with valuable technical skills but also helped me hone my logical problem-solving and analytical abilities, which have been instrumental in my career. I initially kicked off my professional path as a Software Engineer. In this role, I gained invaluable experience in software development, allowing me to understand the intricacies of creating user-friendly and efficient solutions. As I progressed, I transitioned into a Product Manager role, where I have had the privilege of being part of numerous successful products at Microsoft. At Microsoft, my team works on building innovative products and tools related to engineering systems, such as builds and deployments, as well as metrics to track efficiency. This role has allowed us to focus on enhancing overall efficiency and output, contributing positively to the work environment and the user experience. Beyond my professional endeavors, I also have a keen interest in content creation, which inspired me to produce various pieces of content, including engaging videos, modeling projects, and my current book. Sharing my knowledge and insights on a myriad of topics has always been a passion of mine. Furthermore, I’m committed to mentoring others in my field because I understand the powerful impact of guidance; I never really had a mentor myself and had to navigate my journey independently, which attests to my work ethic. However, I strongly believe that having mentors is crucial to personal development, as they provide valuable perspectives and support.
What inspired you to become a social media influencer:
While I wouldn’t label myself as an influencer just yet, being a black, curvy girl with 4c hair, I completely understand the importance of representation and diversity within the media industry. Growing up, I did not often see people who mirrored my appearance in mainstream media, which left me feeling like my unique attributes were not accepted or appreciated. The advent of social media was a game-changer; it unveiled a platform for me to showcase my distinctive beauty and connect with others who share similar life experiences. I seized the opportunity to amplify my voice in order to uplift and inspire other black, curvy girls with 4c hair, who may have similarly felt underrepresented or overlooked in the media landscape. Additionally, as I began to garner a following on social media, I became acutely aware of the power of influence and the potential to use my platform for positive change. I actively utilize my social media presence to advocate for body positivity, self-love, and inclusivity while aiming to amplify the voices of other marginalized communities. This advocacy is not just a hobby but a passion that drives my content creation and engagement with my audience.
If you could change one thing about social media.
As someone well-versed in Computer Science, I recognize that social media platforms rely on complex algorithms to curate and personalize content for each user. If I could change one thing about social media, I would prioritize investing in more effective AI tools designed to detect and eliminate harmful content, particularly that which promotes cyberbullying, harassment, misinformation, hate speech, and addiction. It’s vital for users to critically assess the content they consume and the manner in which they engage with various social media platforms. They should be aware of the possible negative implications of social media and take proactive steps to limit their exposure to certain types of content. Ultimately, it’s important to remember that the online world doesn’t always reflect reality, and one should be cautious not to take online comments to heart.
If you could be someone for a moment, who would you rather be and why?
While I appreciate the essence of this question, I genuinely wouldn’t desire to be anyone else for a day. I am wholly content with being myself, and I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the life I lead. My journey has woven unique experiences, relationships, and perspectives into the fabric of who I am, and I wouldn’t want to sacrifice that for anyone else’s life. However, if I had to choose, I would select someone who has faced and triumphed over significant adversity, using their experiences to uplift others. There are countless inspiring individuals who have dealt with major challenges and emerged stronger, and I would welcome the chance to learn from their journeys and insights. Nevertheless, I would still prefer to remain true to myself, as I take immense pride in who I am and the life I have meticulously built.
What is the best piece of advice you could give to a newbie:
One critical piece of advice is to think carefully about your target audience for your social media page. Understanding who you want to reach is foundational. From there, simply be yourself and post consistently; over time, you will discover your tribe and connect with those who genuinely appreciate your content. It’s important to manage your expectations, as friends and family may not always be your primary audience, and that’s completely okay.
What do you do about nasty or negative comments on social media?
My philosophy is: don’t take critique from someone you wouldn’t take advice from. Negative comments can sometimes serve to push your content further into the spotlight, so either way, you are still winning.
