A Conversation with Thobeka Cynthia Gumede

In our latest feature for Model Guide Mag, we sit down with a woman whose beauty is matched only by her dedication to her community. Representing Mtubatuba, 32-year-old Thobeka Cynthia Gumede is more than just a pageant contender; she is a visionary leader and a beacon of hope for the next generation.

Thobeka’s relationship with the camera and the stage began long before she reached adulthood. Starting her modeling journey at the age of 9 in school pageants, what began as a childhood hobby soon blossomed into a genuine passion. Driven by an innate interest in fashion and creativity, Thobeka found her stride with the help of a supportive circle. At first, it started with people around her encouraging her to try it, proving that sometimes the people who see our potential before we do are the ones who push us toward our destiny.

While her presence on the runway is undeniable, Thobeka’s life off-stage is equally impressive. She balances a demanding schedule that includes academic pursuits, her professional career, and her leadership of her NPO, Moon Projects, which focuses on upskilling youth and providing essential needs to those in her community.

For Thobeka, entering the Miss iCora FM pageant isn’t about the crown—it’s about the influence. Winning would mean more than just a title; it would provide a platform to inspire and upskill youth to pursue their dreams with confidence. Her message to her fellow contestants is one of unity and empowerment: “Take Your Space. Nothing is more important than claiming your place in society and letting your presence be felt.”

When asked about her inspiration, Thobeka looks to her roots. Her role model is her grandmother, Mrs. TN Gumede, who has shown her strength, determination, and unconditional love throughout her life. Watching her grandmother overcome challenges while remaining kind and hardworking inspires Thobeka to be the best version of herself every day.

In the next five years, Thobeka envisions herself as a leader and a mentor, continuing to pave the way for others to follow. She is a powerful reminder that when you combine grace with a mission, you don’t just walk the runway—you lead the way.
