At just 16 years old, Samkelo is already making waves in the South African modeling industry. The Grade 11 student from Port Elizabeth’s KwaDwesi township has turned his shyness into a strength, using the world of fashion as a platform to boost his confidence and personal growth.
Samkelo’s modeling journey began last year when he joined the Sophisticate modeling agency, determined to step out of his comfort zone. “I was very shy, and I wanted to get out of my comfort zone, so I joined the Sophisticate modeling agency,” he recalls.
The decision to pursue modeling was not solely about the glitz and glamour of the industry. Samkelo’s primary motivation was to build his self-esteem and personal development. “I chose modeling to boost my confidence and grow personally,” he explains.
And the gamble has paid off. Since joining the agency, Samkelo has gone from strength to strength, entering and being selected as a finalist for prestigious competitions such as Mr. EC Teen 2024, Mr. Winterlook 2024, and Mr. EC Modelhunt 2024. His latest achievement is being selected as a Top Model Finalist.
Samkelo attributes much of his success to the unwavering support of his parents and his modeling mentor, Gail Brown. “I give thanks to Father God,” he says. “What would it be without God? Anything! Everything I achieved was through him, my parents for supporting me on this journey, and my modeling mentor Gail Brown for helping me build my self-confidence.”
But Samkelo’s aspirations extend beyond the catwalk. Academically, he dreams of becoming a lawyer, and he hopes that his experiences in the modeling world will ultimately help him achieve his goal of becoming Mr. South Africa.
“To meet new people and make friends” is another reason Samkelo is passionate about modeling. The industry has provided him with a platform to connect with like-minded individuals and forge meaningful relationships.
As Samkelo continues to navigate the competitive world of modeling, his story serves as an inspiration to others who may be struggling with shyness or low self-esteem. His journey demonstrates that with determination, faith, and the support of those around you, anything is possible.
