At some point in our lives, we’ve dreamt of doing our best catwalk on that Prada runway or working on that Calvin Klein photoshoot. We’ve dreamt of becoming the ” Naomi Campbell” of Zimbabwe and basking in the attention and fame of our hard work, but as we looked at the prospect of modelling as a career, we’ve slowly realised that it is not a walk in the park or runway. It takes time, dedication and work to have a successful career.

First of all, we have to understand that a model uses their physical appearance to promote or help brands and companies advertise their products – in this case, those extravagant clothes from Dior or Tapfumanei Munenge.

So let’s dive in and look at what building a modelling career is like in Zimbabwe and how you can jumpstart your dream.

1. Model?

Before you start researching how to get brand deals, you have to decide what kind of model you want to be. Modelling is not all about walking the runway (as much as many of us want that) but there are many types of models including but not limited to commercial models, plus-size models, parts models, fashion models or even alternative models. So you have to decide which one suits you and your personality best and use that as your starting point.

2. Practice makes perfect!

Now if you decide to become a runway or commercial model then you have to start practising to walk the walk and talk the talk. Study how other models pose and walk. Their facial expressions and how they carry themselves. Practice and perfect your craft because the more you gain confidence in your work, the more you attract potential employers and brands. Besides you need the practice because who wants to hire a runway model that can’t walk and you’re gonna use this for number three!

3. Build your portfolio.

This might be the hundredth time you hear this but build your portfolio because sadly your word is not enough, especially in the modelling industry. People and brands want to see that you can do the “Naomi Campbell” walk. So building your portfolio from the early stages helps potential brands and agents to determine you’re the right fit. Remember Balenciaga models are not the same as Louis Vuitton models.

4. Start reaching out.

Now that you’ve established the kind of model you want to be and have built your portfolio, you need to start reaching out to the brands and agents you want to work with. Do not be shy to self-promote. Use your social media platforms to advertise, network and connect with other models and creatives that work for the brands you like. You never know who is going to say your name in places you can’t be at!

Now that you’ve gotten a glimpse of how you can start your modelling career make sure to dedicate your time and effort to creating opportunities for yourself because no one knows you until you show up.
